Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Burnbox

How secure is Burnbox?

Burnbox uses AES-256 encryption, the same standard used by banks and governments. All encryption happens in your browser before data is sent to our servers. We never see your unencrypted secrets, and the encryption key never leaves your device.

What happens after someone views my secret?

Once viewed, your secret is immediately and permanently deleted from our servers. There's no way to recover it. The link becomes invalid and cannot be used again. This ensures your sensitive information is truly ephemeral.

How long do secrets last if never viewed?

All secrets automatically expire after 24 hours, even if they're never opened. This prevents old, forgotten secrets from lingering in our database and ensures your data doesn't persist indefinitely.

Do I need to create an account?

No! Burnbox is completely anonymous and requires no registration. Just create a secret, share the link, and you're done. We don't track who creates secrets or who views them.

Can I see if someone has viewed my secret?

No. Once you create a secret, you won't receive any notifications or tracking information. This is by design to maintain complete privacy for both the sender and recipient.

What if I accidentally close the tab before copying the link?

Unfortunately, once you close or navigate away from the page, you won't be able to retrieve the link. Make sure to copy it immediately after creating the secret. This is part of our zero-knowledge design - we can't help you recover lost links.

About Burnbox

A better way to share sensitive information

Why We Built This

Sharing passwords over email, Slack, or text messages leaves a permanent trail of your sensitive data. We created Burnbox to solve this problem with a simple principle: secrets should disappear after they're shared.

Zero-Knowledge Architecture

Your data is encrypted in your browser using AES-256 before it ever leaves your device. The encryption key is included in the URL fragment (after the #), which never gets sent to our servers. This means we physically cannot read your secrets, even if we wanted to.

Best Practices

  • Always verify you're sending the link to the right person
  • Use a separate secure channel to notify the recipient
  • Remember: once viewed, the secret cannot be recovered
  • For maximum security, share the link over encrypted channels
